Nothing after death

Here we have an example of Billy Graham responding irrationally to a rational opinion about death...
Q: I don't believe anything happens after we die. When we die, that's the end, and hopefully we've had a good time along the way. People who think we're going to go on living in some perfect world are just kidding themselves, in my opinion. -- C.F.P.
Sounds like CFP has it right to me. As far as all the evidence goes, there's no sign that there is anything other than this life.
A: Your letter saddened me because it means you're living only for this present world -- with all of its problems and uncertainties -- and you have nothing to look forward to. You're like those of whom the Bible speaks, "without hope and without God in the world" (Ephesians 2:12).
Nothing to look forward to? Quite the contrary! There is almost always something to look forward to. Exactly what that is will differ from person to person. One thing I look forward to is growing old with my wonderful wife. I don't need a god to look forward to that, nor does CFP need a god in order to look forward to getting married, buying a house, becoming an actor, or whatever it is that lights his inner spark.
I can't help but wonder if you've really thought through what it means to believe that death is the end, and there is no Heaven or final judgment.
Yup, yup, and yup. There is nothing after death, no Heaven or final judgement. Death is it. You will simply cease to be. I didn't exist before my birth, and after my death I will no longer exist again and the atoms that make up my body will once more be recycled by the universe.
If this is true, it means you will never again see those you once loved.
Sad but true... such is life. But it also gives us all the more reason to appreciate them and this finite time we'll have together all the more. Don't take your loved ones for granted under the assumption that you will have eternity to catch up. If you are wrong you risk not taking those relationships seriously and will never get a second chance to make it right.
If this is true, it means there is no final justice; the tyrants and abusers and murderers of this world will never have to pay for their sins.
Sins? No. Crimes? Yes, we do make them pay. That's what the legal system is for. And that's better than final judgement in two ways. Christianity proposes infinite punishment for a finite crime. That is unfair and immoral. Christian justice also isn't even justice. The tyrants, abusers, and murderers Billy mentions will not be judged at all if they are Christians. All their heinous crimes would simply be washed away and forgotten. What more, they will be granted eternal reward. That is not justice of any sort!
And if this is true, your life has no ultimate meaning or purpose, nor does it have any hope.
Not ultimate, no. But here's a shocker... I don't need to be told what my purpose is in order to have meaning in my life. Like every other atheist I know, my life has plenty of meaning. Be it loving my wife, learning new things, being brightened by our cats acting cute or silly, caring for my garden, touching the lives of those I know and care for...

There is purpose as well, there is the purpose of bringing my wife love, happiness, and security. There is the purpose of this blog... countering religious superstition with a healthy dose of logic. In short, I strive to try and help make this world a better place than it was when I entered it.

I have hope as well. Hope that religion will continue to fall in influence throughout my lifetime. Hope that science will solve the medical and other pressing problems of our age. Heck, I even hope that my Manchester United will return to being the best team in England, and even Europe.
But listen: This isn't true!
That's right, what Billy just said about nonbelievers isn't true...
This life isn't all there is; you and I were made for eternity.
That's a big claim. Does Billy have any proof that this is true, or anything more than just wishful thinking?
We know this because slightly over 2,000 years ago God came down from heaven in the person of His Son, Jesus Christ. He did this to make our salvation possible by opening heaven's door for every person who turns to Him in faith and trust.
This is something else that also hasn't been proven. So the proof that that this life isn't all there is, is a rumor?  Not very impressive...
I can't help but wonder, however, why you've come to this conclusion. Is it because you don't want God in your life?
Actually, it's probably because there is no proof that there is anything other than this life. Since this life is the only one we know we will have, it only makes logical sense to enjoy this life to it's fullest rather than shortchanging the only life we know we will get in the hopes of a second life that is far from guaranteed. To foolishly sacrifice something as precious as the only life you have on no more than a wish is something very sad indeed.

Atheist lies!?

Over at Today Christian, they posted an article about the supposed lies of atheists. Admittedly, I'm not having very high hopes for the article since it's titled in the grammatically incorrect manner of '5 Lies Atheist Tell'. Who wants to be the one to tell that that the plural of atheist is not atheist? Let's get to this list shall we...

1. The Biggest One- THERE IS NO GOD.
They would have no problem telling a dying child there is NO God. Clearly they have no idea if there is or there isn’t. They assume their conclusion is the only right one.
There are so many problem here I'm not sure where to begin... most atheists don't even say that there is no god. So right of the bat, the title should now be '5 Things Some Atheists Say'. Similarly, most atheists wouldn't go up and tell a dying child that is a believer that there is no God. I'd rather the child die in that bubble of false comfort than to do as the author is suggesting.

They claim that atheists say that there is no God, but that simply isn't true. Most of us either say that there probably isn't a God, or that we simply don't believe in God. Few of us go as far as saying that there absolutely isn't a God.

But the biggest problem here is that what they are claiming here is impossible! They are claiming that atheists lie when saying there is no God. But a lie is willful and knowing deception. In order to lie about there not being a God, you must know there is a God, and say that there isn't. But the thing is that if you know there is a God, then you aren't an atheist at all! It's pretty embarrassing that their biggest point is self contradictory.

2. They say they have “Open Minds”.

We know that is not the case. When presented with spiritual issues they always dismiss it as fictitious, invalid or unsupported stories.
Sorry, but this isn't even close to true. I, and most atheists, do have an open mind. The reason we still disbelieve when a believer offers a story of a personal 'spiritual experience' is that they have simply failed to provide compelling evidence. The same is true of belief in prayer, etc. I am open to being wrong about prayer or the after-life, but until I see evidence that these things are true, I won't believe. This doesn't make me close-minded. My mind remains open to the possibility, I simply withhold judgement until belief can be justified.

I also find it rather ironic that a Christian page is accusing atheists of being close-minded. Every single time I have asked a Christian what could change their mind, they tell me 'nothing'. When I've asked if they think there is any chance they are wrong, the reply is always 'no'. If anyone is close-minded, it is the believer that refuses any possibility of fault. Not the atheist that simply wants proof.

3. Christianity teaches you to not think.
Atheist assume that the Bible soemhow [sic] teaches Christians to not use your brain. This is clearly not the case.

“My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge” (Hos 4:6)
“For wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her” (Prov 8:11)
“Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline, and understanding” (Prov 23:23)
This sounds pretty anti-thinking to me...
Okay, there are some verses that seem to approve of knowledge. But that's the thing about the Bible... There are also verses that suggest the very opposite as well.
“Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed [are] they that have not seen, and [yet] have believed.” – John 20: 29

“God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise” - 1 Corinthians 1:27
“That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.” - 1 Corinthians 2:5
So we have a book that sends some very mixes messages. But then lets remember how many times a
Christian  has said that if there is a conflict between the Bible and science, that they must reject the science in favor of the Bible. Obviously not all Christians are this way, but science denial is pretty anti-thinking to me. Allowing thinking, so long as it's only within the confines of the Bible is still a restriction on thinking.

4. Science exists despite religion.
Truth: Science exists specifically because of religion. The scientific method comes from studying philosophy and Newtonian physics comes from studying astronomy. Religion caused people to study both philosophy and astronomy.
This one actually made me laugh. Science is not a product of religion. Especially Christianity. Science is far, far older than Christianity, and can be traced back to as far back as mankind has ever had questions and tried to find out the answers. Sure science now is more advanced, but science is and always has been a product of curiosity. Curiosity that religion has many a time tried to extinguish. Just look at the church's treatment of Galileo.

5. They Don’t Care If There Is Or Isn’t A God.
Deep down inside of everyone’s heart there is a missing element that is always questioning, searching and longing to find God. They may try to ignore it but it still remains there.
Talk about absurd! I'd say that I care very much about the question of if there is a God or not. That's why we ask the question in the first place. That's why we do the research, why we ask the hard questions. If there is a God, I certainly want to know, so I'd say that the truth is actually the opposite of what Today Christian claims.

As is usually the case, we find another Christian list about atheists to be wholly flawed and false. Why am I not surprised that this one is no different...

Moved by a movie?

Wonderful... The new Left Behind movie isn't out until October 3rd, but some are already calling for people to go see it en masse. One of those promoting the film is a star (and I use that term very loosely) of the annoyingly moronic show Duck Dynasty. Willie Robertson is actually very excited for you to go see this movie, and even requests you take along members from a certain group...
Do you think I should tell him that his US flag bandana is
actually a violation of the United States Flag Code?
Let’s all make sure we bring some friends and family to see this movie – people who need to see to believe. Opening the door to unbelievers has never been this fun!
So he wants someone to take someone like me along to see this movie? Okay I guess... I mean, that's the only way I'll ever see it since I'm not going to waste my money on it. But why would he want atheists to go see a movie about something we don't even believe is going to happen?
Like most Christians, my family and I can truly say that we’re excited about the soon return of Jesus,...And I’m sure, if you’ve been watching the news lately, you know that that return could be any day from now.
Yup, any day now... Just like Christians have been saying for 2000 years. By the way, is anyone else disturbed that he's looking forward to the end of the world way too much?
But what about those who may not even know about it? People who don’t even know what’s at stake?
What about all the people in America that have never heard of the Christian rapture? Are there any!? I would certainly say that the vast majority of Americans are very much aware of what Christianity claims. But seeing how I've already lived through 47 end-times predictions, I'm not exactly worried...
Wait... This has Nicolas Cage in it? Maybe
it will be as persuasive as Ghost Rider.
After that I sold my soul to the Devil so
I could ride a demon motorcycle and have
a flaming skull for a head!
Take then to see this film, and naturally they’ll convert and be a-OK. It’s a warning to those, if it happened today, they’d be left behind,...And I believe people are going to make that life-changing decision to follow Christ on the way home from the theater on Oct. 3.
What!? Mr. Duck Impersonator (isn't that kind of like bearing false witness?) somehow equates people that need to see + seeing a movie = believer in Christ? You have got to be joking! Sorry, but watching a fictional movie is not seeing proof or evidence of any kind. Yes watching this movie is sure to make me follow Christ...

Why I remember how after watching Jurassic Park I went out and cloned a T-Rex. Then I watched Dracula and started believing in vampires. Then the fond memories of Harry Potter showing me that dragons are real and turning me into a boy wizard. And how could I ever forget that time I saw Narnia and proceed to step trough a magical wardrobe that was actually a doorway to another world!

God's retirement

One of Billy Graham's readers is bored in retirement and wants to know what the Bible has the say on the matter...
DEAR BILLY GRAHAM: I had always looked forward to retirement, and had done a lot of financial planning to be sure we’d be comfortable. But I’ve been retired two years now, and I’m bored to death. Does the Bible say anything about retirement? — N.G.
Maybe it's high time Billy hung up his pen and Bible...
Here's a novel idea... Maybe try picking up some kind of hobby. I feel like I will also find myself being anxious in retirement. I always have to be doing something, so in my case, I feel like my landscaping will be getting a large portion of my life after work. For my dad it will probably be going to car shows and taking care of those cars. Maybe NG should travel, take up painting, or some other hobby.
DEAR N.G.: The most important thing the Bible says about this is that no matter how young or old we are, God has a purpose for every stage of our lives. We’re never useless if our lives are in God’s hands, and we’ll never be bored.

Most people in Bible times worked as long as they could; they had to, because life depended on the success of the next crop. In other words, the modern idea of retirement — stepping aside while we’re still able to work — would have seemed strange to them. This doesn’t mean it’s wrong to retire, however; retirement isn’t forbidden by the Bible.
Sure, the Bible doesn't forbid retirement... But it doesn't forbid slavery either, so I don't think relying on the Bible as your sole guide is that great of an idea.
See your retirement as a gift from God — and then ask him how he wants you to spend it.
So NG asks Billy what he thinks about retirement and his answer is the proverbial passing of the buck of  "Ask your mother." Maybe it's just me, but I don't find that answer very helpful or reassuring.

How do you know the Bible is right?

The Jesus Christ is King's facebook page posted a video by Clayton Jennings that is supposed to address the question of how Christians know that the Bible is right. He's very sure of his answer, but he really shouldn't be...
People always ask me how I know that I'm right and other people are wrong. It's not about me being right and them being wrong. It's simply about what God says. We have to come back to fact and to truth.
We need to rely on facts and truth? Well that actually sounds very refreshing and rational, please carry on...
God says that the only way to get to God is through Jesus Christ.
Wait... What happened to fact and truth. Clayton jumps straight from a rational statement to asserting the unproven claim as fact. Does he have a dictionary, because he really needs to look up what a fact is.
Jesus said he was the way, the truth, the light. No man can come through the father except trough me.
I see a claim, but still no facts or proof.
Jesus could have made that claim, and then he could have gone on to live his life doing all his great miracles...but is Jesus had died and stayed dead he would have been just another religious fraud, another religious phony.
Hold on... What!? How would Jesus be a fraud if he actually healed people and rose people from the dead, but wasn't himself resurrected? I don't know about you, but if I saw Jesus do what he supposedly did, I'd be colored pretty damn impressed. How would him literally being magic make him just another phony? Because, you know, people raise the dead all that time, right... Maybe the phony thing is the claims that he did any of it since none of it is actually recorded anywhere historically.
Just like all other religious leaders that talked a big game and done great things, there comes a time where you have to put your money where your mouth is. Jesus was no different. The difference is that when Jesus died he didn't stay dead. No other religious leader died and them raised from the dead.
The first thing lacking is any proof that Jesus actually returned from the dead. Also, Clayton needs to do at least a little research, because religious leaders being said to have returned from the dead is nothing unique to Jesus. Others supposedly did as well, and even before Jesus is said to have done so.
Over 500 people are recorded in history having seen him walk and talk after coming back to life.
I notice he doesn't cite any sources. Perhaps that's because what he just said was a lie. There are no historical records of people even confirming that Jesus ever existed, let alone that they saw him after returning from the dead. Provide just one reliable first person contemporaneous account and I'll believe in at least a historical Jesus, and maybe even a divine one. Your move believers...
In fact, 10 out of his 12 disciples went on to be martyred for their faith. Boldly telling the world about this Jesus they had seen come back to life. So much they were killed for it. Do you honesty believe that 10 out of 12 would go on to be murdered for their faith had they not witnessed the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It would never happen, if Jesus died and stayed dead they would have abandoned the faith and rightfully so because Jesus would have been a fake. But Jesus wasn't fake.
Again, there is no record that any of this actually happened. And so what if they believed so much that they were willing to die for their faith? Some Muslims are willing to become suicide bombers because they are so sure of their faith. Does that conviction prove Muhammad and Allah to be the 100% factual truth? What about Waco, TX? 76 of them were willing to die for their religious leader, and did pay that price even though he didn't return from the dead. What about Charles Manson, he wasn't resurrected yet his 'family' were amazingly loyal to the point of killing for him.
He lived a sinless life.
Try again. I've already written before that he was anything but sinless! Jesus had sin too, Jesus doubted God's plan for him, and he wasn't immune to bouts of anger.
He's coming back again. Because everything he said would happen, happened. And everything he says will happen, is going to happen.
There's no proof he said anything. And even if he did say these things, he didn't fulfill all anyway. He said he would return in his disciples lifetimes... he didn't. He also makes some big claims of things that will happen before the generation of his disciples passed. These include the gospel being preached to all nations and the stars falling from the sky. These also didn't happen. What we have here is failed prophesy.
Why is Jesus right, and other religious leaders wrong? Because Jesus came back to life.
Again, prove first that he did. And what about Dionysus, Persephone, Osiris, Odin, Ganesha, Lemminkainen, Tammuz, Krishna, Quetzalcoatl, Attis, Mithras, and countless others that are said to also have risen from the dead? Guess they're all real now too...
Why do we tell people about Jesus Christ? Is it because we want to say that we're right and you're wrong? We're smart and you're dumb? We've got it figured out and you don't? We only tell people about Jesus Christ out of love.
Maybe some do, but not all. Though I fail to see the love in telling people they are going to burn forever and that they deserve it. I also don't see the love in trying to restrict equal rights from whole groups of people. Yes, some believe that they are being loving by telling about Jesus. They sincerely believe that the are being helpful. But here's the thing... This brand of believer can get rather annoying with their persistence. Constantly talking about Jesus, Jesus, Jesus as if it was brand new information isn't helpful because it's isn't new information. In the USA we have all heard about Jesus already. But there certainly are those that will tell about Jesus to play the 'I'm right, you're wrong' game, and those that simply want to convert others for power or to oppress.
One of my closest friends in the world is a Muslim. I continuously share my faith with him. I want him to know Jesus.
You see that word there? Continuously. That's the problem. If you are acting like a broken record for Jesus and they don't bite it's either because they aren't interested or already know about Jesus. I've seen being annoyingly persistent with talking about Jesus even annoy other Christians for crying out loud!

Also, Clayton needs to learn a little more about his supposed Muslim friend's faith. Because if he did, he would learn that he already does know Jesus since he is a messenger of God in Islam (but no resurrection). They even believe that he will return in the end times, but the honor of being the final prophet of God goes to Muhammad instead of Jesus.
Jesus proved he was God when he came back to life. History records it, scripture shows it.
And yet no one in recorded history never thought to write it down when it supposedly happened. Hearsay is not proof!
Anyone who calls upon the name of the lord will be saved. If that doesn't happen, God is a liar. And God isn't a liar.
And you established this how exactly? Here we have an unsubstantiated claim, and a blind assertion. There is an option he's missing though. If you call upon the name of God and aren't saved you also could have picked the wrong god, or there may be no gods at all.

It is odd that this video started out with the rational call to stick to the facts and then did anything but. I'm sure Clayton is sincere in his belief, but his answer to the initial question is rather lacking. How does Clayton know the Bible is right? Well because of the Bible silly! Irrational circular reasoning at it's worst...

No pleasing God

Is doing good enough to please God? Can he be pleased? That's what someone asked Billy Graham.
Q: Every day, I really try to please God by doing everything I think He'd want me to do, but how do I know if I've succeeded? I hope I'll be good enough to get into heaven.
Personally, I'd worry about if there is a God or not before concerning yourself with if you are pleasing him or not...
A: It's not wrong to want to please God, of course; far too many people, I'm afraid, simply ignore Him or don't care what He thinks about them. The Bible urges us to "please him in every way: bearing fruit in every
good work" (Colossians 1:10).
Please him in every way? So we should still be offering him burnt sacrifices then?
But listen: It is wrong to want to please God for the wrong reason! Right now, you hope that you can somehow get God to like you, if you'll only be good enough. In other words, you hope you can earn God's love by being a good person. And that probably sounds logical to you, since that's the way we often treat each other.
Yes, being a good person really should be the measure anyone gives another in order to determine if they are a, you know... a good person.
But God isn't like this! No matter how good we are, we can never earn God's love - because God's standard is perfection. In other words, even one sin - just one - would be enough to keep you out of heaven. The Bible says, "For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it" (James 2:10).
So what you're saying is that God is an unreasonable tyrant? According to this sadistic god's standard, stealing a 25¢ pack of Juicy Fruit gum is equal to perpetrating the Holocaust! Also, how can he even begin to expect perfection when he isn't even perfect and has supposedly cursed mankind from birth. What kind of sick being would purposely create imperfect beings and then punish them for not being perfect?
Does this mean God will never love you, and you can never be saved? Absolutely not! You aren't perfect, but Jesus was, and He came to forgive you and make you part of His family forever. He did this because God loves you and wants you to be with Him in heaven forever. Now God offers you salvation as a free gift - free, because Christ has already paid for it by His death on the cross for you. Receive this gift today by trusting Christ - and not yourself - for your salvation.
Maybe Billy doesn't realize this, but there's a few problems here. First there is the fact that there is no proof that there was a Jesus or that he did what he claims. Then there's the claim that Jesus was perfect... I've already wrote before that he was anything but! Jesus had sin too, Jesus doubted God's plan for him, and he wasn't immune to bouts of anger. So Billy, it would seem that being like Jesus wouldn't be the answer. And should that really surprise you when God was in such a hurry to have is own son killed?

Christ in charge

Alas, it seems that one can't go to a simple street festival without someone handing out some sort of religious handouts. Once again we found ourselves at the Shippensburg, PA Corn Festival. Last year an old veteran was handing out letters. This year there was a woman rushing about and handing out little business cards to everyone she could. And unlike the older man last year, she did not wear a friendly veil. Instead she seemed oblivious and like she was in a hurry to hand out all her cards. She somehow didn't realize that she offered my wife and I a card three times within just a few minutes time, even though we had already taken one (for blog material).

So what did the little business card have to say? On the front was the very direct suggestion to "GIVE Christ charge OF YOUR LIFE He's 1st" I find it odd that believers would put so many words in all caps yet fail to add that extra emphasis to their 'almighty' Christ, but maybe that's just my design background talking...

The reverse side is far more wordy and introduces it's incredibly tiny type under the header "HOW TO GIVE CHRIST CHARGE"
STEP 1 - ACKNOWLEDGE MAN'S PROBLEM
What problem is that? Oh wait, I think I know what it is! It's that we can't seemed to be compelled to actually give a damn to care about or make a real concerted effort to combat climate change, right? Oh, and I can see that the all caps thing is going to be a theme...
All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23
There's a couple problems here... Both sin and God haven't actually been proven to actually be real existent things. You really should prove that first as that is vitally important to how much weight this argument does or doesn't have.
The wages of sin is death (separation from God.) Romans 6:23
And the alternative is? Best I can tell, everyone dies. Even popes and priests. Also, how can one be separated from God? He is supposed to be everywhere at all times as well as all powerful. If he is everywhere, he's not separated from even the most ardent critic of faith. If you are claiming that God can't reach a non-believer, then that throws his infinite power into question.
If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 1 John 1:8
Except that sin has not yet been established to be real. If there is no such thing as sin, and I say I have no sin, than the claim that I am a liar is false. This is why establishing things first is vitally important.
STEP 2 - ACCEPT GOD'S ONLY REMEDY
Only remedy? He's supposed to be all-powerful and limitless. He can make any number of remedies to this imagined problem as he wants. So why just this one remedy?
I am the way...the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me, Jesus Christ. John 14:6
You see, here's the same problem yet again. You claim that Jesus is the answer to the problem (a problem that is yet to be proven to be real), and the very solution is also something that hasn't been shown to have existed. Also, his claims (had he existed) have not been verified. Sorry, but I'm not a fan of building my entire life around hearsay.
Christ gave himself to God for our sins as one sacrifice. Hebrews 10:12
Proof please! Also, why a human sacrifice? How does 'die for our sins' logically follow? Like the comedian Doug Stanhope said, that makes about as much sense about saying you hit yourself on the foot with a shovel for someones mortgage. One doesn't affect the other.
Whoever believes in Him (Jesus) shall not perish but have everlasting life. John 3:16
Again, no proof is provided for this claim. Prove this is true and then I will take notice.
If we confess our sins...Jesus will forgive us. 1 John 1:9
Please provide some proof please... Also, why does Jesus forgiving you matter? Shouldn't having the person you wronged forgive you matter much more?
By grace you have been saved, through faith - it is the gift of God - not by works. Ephesians 2:8-9
Basically, being a good person doesn't matter... all that matters is faith. By that reasoning Hitler would be in  Heaven since he was a Christian while Bill Gates (the worlds most generous philanthropist) would go to Hell because he doesn't believe. That hardly sounds reasonable or fair.
STEP 3 - GIVE CHRIST CHARGE
Ammonite
Give charge to a being that hasn't even been shown to exist? No thanks. Would you turn your life over to Sid the all-loving elf just because someone told you he exists and is great?
I stand at the door and knock. If any man hears my voice, and opens the door, I will come in. Revelations 3:20
I don't hear any knocking... At least when Odin said he was going to get rid of the ice giants he must have delivered. After all when was the last time you saw an ice giant?
Offer (give control of) yourself to God. Romans 6:13
Only if you turn your life over the Thor. You go first!
Orthoceras

It then offers a prayer. The entire card can be condensed into essentially this... Turn your life over to Christ, because Jesus. How inspired! Luckily the rest of the festival was fun, and my mother-in-law got a kick out of them handing us cards. Which admittedly was funny given the knowledge of who they were giving them to. All in all a good time, good food, plus I scored Ammonite and Orthoceras fossils for my collection.
